Congratulations to Singapore for having an opportunity to showcase what this Little Red Dot can do, to put up a world-class event - The Singapore Grand Prix F1 Night Race. With some millions of dollars put into creating the perfect daylight effects for the nightrace, and the masses of volunteers, not forgetting the numbers of roads closed for the event, it is truly magnificient.
Just a week before the wkend events, i have been seeing so many new status updates in facebook and on friend's msn nick. You guessed it! All expressing their excitement and eagerness to be part of this grand event, watching from Grand Stands and all. Funniest is how the frequency of these words,"Race", "Vrooooommmm", "F1", etc pops up almost everywhere online. Even close fren, whom cant be bothered to update his facebook status, too, joined in this F1 frenzy, expressing his happiness to "go to the race".
Me? Not a racing fan. Dun know how to appreciate the "Fast and Furious", cant understand the rationale of risking lives to compete (hey! I heard these racers are uninsured!!), but am extremely interested in the logistical aspects. Funny for a woman? Not quite, having come from a logistical background, it makes sense for me and hb to be bitching about the type of lightings and generators used, the contractors used for building the grand stands etc. I remembered i casually asked him, if Old Man was still alive, would hb forsee an opportunity for the old company to dabble in this multi-millions productions? His short and definite reply, was a firm headshake. That speaks all, isn't it?
And so, we found ourselves, non-avid fans, eyes "glued" to the TV screen, watching the "Live Telecast" on Ch5 for the Formula 1 Race. Damn! I missed the flag-off! Actually am not sure if it was even broadcasted, the flag-off i mean. Why? Cos i am a woman! I wanna see and decide for myself, if the costume was indeed like the SingTel Grid Gal had mentioned, tennis gear rather than sexy outfit. No luck! Maybe someone who's been there, seen it all, can give me a fair share of your comments??
For the next 45mins, all that i can say, is "give me a break?" Took me a long time to understand the assessment results of the race. For once, "HAM" is no longer my favourite food!! It is the short form for Lewis "Hamilton", the Mclaren Mercedes Racer! Dammit! Young and a little cute looking too! Wahahaha... But I did learn something from this short 45mins. That one indeed, cannot be too complacent huh? The comperes were discussing at how HAM had fallen into complacency and emerged "almost" last, in Qualifying Round 1. Seems like he swerved off racing track, and had some timing added as penalty? Something like dat??? Actually, i thot i heard the comperes used the term "Cue 1/2/3" to describe the race. Did i get it right? I really am no good at this type of racing lingos lah. But, HAM has his strong fanbase for a good reason! Following his disappointing Cue 1 results, he certainly did much better for the next 2 cues! And I found myself mumbling," This chap is incredible!!" when he sped up and overtook 2 cars, and got himself into the 2nd spot.
Oh!! And oh!! I have to mention this. During one of the cue, Racer Fernando Alonso, was doing his daredevil swerve when the speeding machine banged into the barricades!!! Breathe-stopping!! Literally! And, hb missed the act!! He was multi-tasking between hearing, watchin and flipping his newspapers! What amused me initially was that he had banged into the barricades and there was an ING banner advertisment hung there! So apt! For he is representing ING Renault F1 Team! Then, it was horror, as i detected smoke gushing out from his machine. That bang, got him into 15th place. He could have been in the top four!! What a shame! And, suddenly, my heart goes out to him, when the media zoomed in onto him, climbing out of the racing car, clenched his fist and hit the air blindly, in a bid to vent his frustration. He then hung his head low, and walked away. It must have been a terrible feeling, I'm sure. To have high expectations and realised he could not excel. Never mind, he still has a chance tonight, though it would be tremendously tough to start the race at the 15th place in the grid.
Well, its the finals today, and yes, unfortunately, just like the Table Tennis Final Match in the recent Olympics, I have no chance to watch, for i will be working. Anyway, hope all racers are safe, and have a good time competing their guts out, at the Singapore GP.
